In goal this week Week 15 ending on Sunday, January 13th 2007 With Goalies’World Magazine editor, Gilles Moffet Goalies’World rankings Luongo in the lead for a 4th week
Goalies’World goalie of the week It’s Ty Conklin again For a second straight week, Ty Conklin, of the Pittsburgh Penguins, gets the Goalies’World Goalie of the Week award. Conklin is 2-0-1, 0.961, 1.31 this week and he delivered three strong road performances. On Tuesday he made 27 saves in a 3-1 win against the Panthers. Two days later, he made 35 saves in a 4-1 win over the Lightning and on Saturday in Atlanta, he stopped 36 of 38 shots in a 3-2 overtime loss. He only let in one goal on four shootout attempts. Conklin is 9-0-1, 0.945, 1.79 since joining the Pens. He is the best ranked goalie of the second group (48th) but he could make a huge jump in the rankings when his playing time will qualify him for the first group and that could happen this week. In fact, he could jump from the 48th rank to the 3rd rank in our rankings if he maintains his 103.7 Goalies’World points. Goalies’World printed version Issue 65 dedicated to Tim Thomas Issue 65 of Goalies’World Magazine is now on the newsstands and our popular illustrated style analysis features the acrobatic Tim Thomas (cover) of the Boston Bruins. The spectacular Thomas, who was our Goalie of the Month in October and November is a fascinating study. Issue 65 also announces that Roberto Luongo is our 2007 Goalie of the Year and show the impressive work of the 12 candidates to this title. Issue 65 also features columns with four active NHL goalie coaches (Mitch Korn, David Marcoux, Stephane Waite and Steve Mckichan) plus one former NHL goalie coach (Brian Daccord). Justin Johnson, goalie coach at St. Cloud State University, also has a very interesting column on the mental side, explaining the importance of developing a pre-game and a pre-practice routine. Garon had the hottest game of the week, a 35-save home shutout against the New York Islanders on Monday. Goalies’World rookie of the week Three big Ws for Josh Harding What a week by Josh Harding, of the Minnesota Wild. Some say he is making a bid for the number one job and if he keeps playing that way, that may just happen. Harding had three wins this week, including one in relief duties in Detroit (of all places). Harding made 26 saves on 27 shots in a period and a half and stopped two of three shootout attempts. NHL debut Tough debut for Thomas Greiss The 22-year old German goalie, Thomas Greiss, had a tall order in his NHL debut on Sunday in San Jose. He was facing the Stanley Cup champions, Anaheim Mighty Ducks after being recalled from Worcester on Sunday. Greiss was 28 seconds away from his goal late in the 3rd period when goalie J.S. Giguere was on the Ducks bench in favor of a 6th player. The Ducks tied the games with 28 seconds left to regulation and added another goal only 33 seconds into the overtime for a 4-3 win, Overall, Greiss made 25 saves in that game. Ironically, it was the 44th game of the season for the Sharks and the first one not involving Evgeni Nabokov after 43 consecutive starts. A goalie is credited with a stolen victory when he wins in spite of his team being outshot by 10 shots or more. He also has to have a 0.900 save percentage in that game.
