Goalies’World rankings

Luongo and Vokoun pass Thomas

The Goalies’World Goalie of the Year, Roberto Luongo, of the Vancouver Canucks, is the new leader in the Goalies’World rankings, followed by Tomas Vokoun, of the Florida Panthers and previous leader, Tim Thomas, of the Boston Bruins. Thomas (Boston) returned to action after missing two weeks of play but obviously, our 6-week leader did not show the form that made him the top NHL goalie for the months of October and November. Thomas had two average performances, losing two home games (one in a shootout against the Pens) against Pittsburgh (5-4) and the other one to St. Louis (4-3). Meanwhile, Luongo was spectacular this week with four hot games and a 3-1, 0.953, 1.48 record, stopping 121 of 126 shots. He is in a stretch of 10 consecutive hot games in which he has a 7-2-1 won-loss record. He also is our Goalie of the Week.

Goalies’World goalie of the week

Luongo also goalie of the week

What a week by Roberto Luongo! After being named Goalies’World Magazine Goalie of The Year, his four hot games of the week earned him our Goalie of the Week honor and helped him to pass Tim Thomas (Thomas) as the Goalies’World rankings leader. And you know what! The way he is playing right now (10 straight hot games), he may be in the lead for the rest of the season.

Goalies’World printed version

Issue 65 dedicated to Tim Thomas

Issue 65 of Goalies’World Magazine is now on the newsstands and our popular illustrated style analysis features the acrobatic Tim Thomas (cover) of the Boston Bruins. The spectacular Thomas, who was our Goalie of the Month in October and November is a fascinating study. Issue 65 also announces that Roberto Luongo is our 2007 Goalie of the Year and show the impressive work of the 12 candidates to this title.  Issue 65 also features columns with four active NHL goalie coaches (Mitch Korn, David Marcoux, Stephane Waite and Steve Mckichan) plus one former NHL goalie coach (Brian Daccord). Justin Johnson, goalie coach at St. Cloud State University, also has a very interesting column on the mental side, explaining the importance of developing a pre-game and a pre-practice routine.

Hot game of the week

Ryan Miller stops 42 in 2-1 win

The best performance of the week belongs to Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres. Miller (now ranked 16th) stopped 42 shots in a 2-1 Sabres road win in Long Island on Wednesday. It was Miller’s first stolen win of the season. He is in a current stretch of 6 consecutive wins.

Goalies’World rookie of the week

Ramo is new actor in soap opera

After three straight weeks as Goalies’World Rookie of the Week, Carey Price (Montreal) stepped down from the podium. This time the honor goes to Kari Rammo, of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Recently called up from the Norfolk Admirals, Ramo had two home starts and he was red hot, stopping 64 of 67 shots. He first made 31 saves on Thursday in a 2-1 win over the Leafs, and on Saturday, he stopped 33 of 35 in a 4-1 loss to the Hurricanes. Needless to say, Ramo is the new ingredient in the goaltending soap opera that goes on and on in Tampa Bay. The Lightning is desperately trying to make a number one goalie but do they have one? The only one with proven credentials is Marc Denis but with only one hot performance out of 10, he is not exactly forcing the hand of coach John Tortorella. On the other hand, Tortorella hasn’t showed any respect to Denis. He hasn’t previously, and he hasn’t this year.  In fact, it’s awful how he is treating Denis who only had four starts this year. Six of his 10 outings were in relief duties and if you don’t believe that’s an insult, read this. After three average (but not bad) starts On Dec. 11th, Denis had his best start of the year in Montreal, making 28 saves on 30 shots and stopping all three shootout attempts to lead the Ligtning to a 3-2 shootout win. How was he rewarded? As of Dec. 23rd, he as yet to get another start and they called up Ramo. Now, despite his solid play this week one may wonder how long that will last. Ramo has not even proved that he can be a dominang goalie in the Amrerican League. And Tortorella expects him to be a number one in Tampa? It just doesn’t make sense. Tortorella is not helping Ramo. He is not helping Denis. He is not helping Holmqvist. He is not helpimg his team.

Stolen win of the week

Ryan Miller stops 42 in 2-1 win

The stolen win of the week is also the best performance of the week and it belongs to Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres. Miller (now ranked 16th) stopped 42 shots in a 2-1 Sabres road win in Long Island on Wednesday. It was Miller’s first stolen win of the season. He is in a current stretch of 6 consecutive wins.

A goalie is credited with a stolen victory when he wins in spite of his team being outshot by 10 shots or more. He also has to have a 0.900 save percentage in that game.
